An inversion is a chord in which the bass note is a note other than the root of the chord.

If you are trying to identify the root of the chord, an easy method is this:

If it’s in root position with the notes perfectly stacked, the root is the bottom note.

If the notes are not perfectly stacked, look for the gap which forms a perfect 4th.

The upper note will always be the root.
