When you are using music notation, how do you know when you are supposed to use a sharp vs a flat?

Sharp vs flat

It depends on what key you are in. First, find the note that represents the first note in the key. For example, in the key of E major, this would be E. According to the system Bach used, a note between 1 and 2 would be a sharp because it is leading up to 2.

The note between 2 and 3 would commonly be a #2

The note between 4 and 5 would commonly be a #4

The note between 5 and 6 would commonly be a #5 because it indicates a modulation to the relative minor.

The note between 6 and 7 would be a b7
